What to bring on a bushwalk

This list is for single-day bushwalk. If we're camping overnight, you'll need more stuff (we've got another list for that).

What to bring bushwalking

  • Sun protection: always bring a hat and sunscreen with you. Some of us prefer to wear long sleeves and long pants even in warm weather, just to keep the sun off.
  • Plenty of water: check with the trip leader but depending on the weather and trip length, you'll usually need 2-3L of water
  • Food: bring lunch and snacks
  • Comfortable, sturdy footwear: ideally hiking boots or trail runners. For most trips, ordinary running shoes may be fine - check with the trip leader. You'll want comfy socks too; this is personal preference - some prefer thick woolen socks, others thin running socks
  • Comfortable clothing, appropriate for weather:
    • a shirt (short sleeve or long sleeve) - preferably synthetic or merino, not cotton
    • shorts or trousers - preferably synthetic, not jeans
    • If it's going to be windy or rainy: a rain jacket, ideally Goretex or other breathable waterproof fabric
    • If it's really cold, a fleece or puffer jacket (or just a jumper) may be needed; and consider wearing thermals
  • A backpack: doesn't have to be fancy, but should be comfortable and large enough to fit all of the items on this list

The trip leader will be carrying a first aid kit, but if you've got one, it doesn't hurt to bring your own just in case.
