Caving

The dark stillness and mystical forms that lay hidden beneath the ancient earth has long enticed the imagination and intrigue of the early adventurers. Today, cave exploration has become a popular leisure-time sport. LUMC provides a unique opportunity for members to explore "wild" cave systems.

When you make your way down into a tunnel network you need to be able to find your way out. This may not be as easy as it sounds as you may need to squeeze through dark, dirty, dank holes. You can also be on the lookout for stalagmites, stalactites, flowstones, rimpools, curtains and all sorts of wonders. There is also the the subterranean creatures such as glowworms, bats and cave crickets that can hold your attention.

What do I need?

If you are going on a caving trip the following list of equipment is almost always needed;

• Clean clothes and shoes for the trip to and from the caves
• Caving Clothing (long sleeves/pants, everything may get destroyed in the cave so nothing you care about). Often overalls are the best form of cave wear.
• Sturdy shoes (again may get destroyed in the cave)
• Garbage bag to contain your muddy cave clothes
• Towel to clean the worst of the mud off after the cave
• Torch and spare batteries (spare, headlamps will be supplied)
• Money for gear hire and split of petrol
• Snacks and something to drink once you have finished.

Note: while caves are beautiful, they are also really rough places so taking a camera is generally not recommended as it could get broken. If you do want to take pictures bring a small camera and something like a Pelican Case to keep it in when not in use (the club has a caving backpack to carry it in).
